Antique Australian Console / Side Table By De Groot SOLD

 (Sydney) Australia, 1915 / 1920. Superbly crafted in the Manner of Thomas Chippendale. The top has canted corners with huon pine burl cross banding & inner  broad cedar cross banding. There are herringbone line inlays and a large feature center panel comprising of parallel rows of book leaf matched red cedar. The frieze has a continuous carved wave motif and a pair of concealed flush fitted drawers.

The legs are of cabriole form with superbly carved ball and claw feet, the ball being in the form of a native Australian seed pod & the carving to the knee's being in the form of a native Australian waratah flower.

Francis Edward  De Groot was a comissioned army captain who is best remembered for his protest when in uniform he rode forward and slashed the ribbon declaring the Sydney Harbour Bridge open "in the good name of decent and responsible Australians" before the then Labor State Premier could officially cut the ribbon. De Groot was also an importer and purveyor of fine antique furniture in Sydney & in the 1920s had a thriving business in Rushcutters Bay where he designed, manufactured and marketed reproductions of the finest quality English furniture. Condition:excellent / wear commensurate with age.
