Set of 8 Antique English Regency style Dining Chairs. SOLD

A$4,995.00

A very stylish set of eight chairs ( two end carver chairs with arms and six side chairs) produced by the renowned Classic Chair Company. These chairs are identical copies of English Regency chairs and are upholstered in black woven horsehair and finished with brass studs. A great price for a set of superb chairs.

The original chairs were made by B. Harmer. Christies describe him as “the elusive B Harmer” for little is known about him. A magnificent set of dining chairs by Harmer was sold by Christies 11/4/91 lot 83. A further pair of arm chairs were sold again by Christies King St. London 1/4/93, lot 55. We do know that he made the very important Dolphin Suite for Powderham Castle which was supplied by MARSH & TATHAM of Mount St. London. It is reasonable to assume that Harmer was active from the late 18th Century up until the first quarter of the 19th Century.

An 1810 original provided the inspiration for this classic and quintessentially Regency dining chair which is perfectly at home in a contemporary or period interior. Very much in the manner of Thomas Hope, it features an inset panel, based on the Greek key, on the elegant curved table back, and the front legs are headed with classic patera. It also has a handsome and comfortable saddle shape seat.

Size: Height: 85 cm x Seat Depth 45 cm x Width50 cm - The carvers are wider at 54 cm.

Condition: Overall very good considering age and use. The frames are structurally sound however the woven horsehair fabric is slightly marked (spotted) on some chairs.
