Antique set of eight Oak Dining Chairs with pressed patterns.

A$2,860.00

On offer are a good and very unusual set of eight genuine antique solid Oak framed Dining Chairs including six side chairs and a pair of end / carver chairs with arms

The chairs were made circa 1900 and feature pressed mask head and stylised foliate designs to the shaped top rail and waist rail of each chair. Between the top rails and the waist rails are padded back panels and they like the seats are upholstered in a brown leatherette with brass studding however some chairs would benefit from a recover as the original fabric is now aged and warn on some chairs. The front legs have a cabriole influence and stylised three paw animal feet. All legs are braced by connecting stretchers.

The feature pressed human face surrounded by flowers and leaves represents the ‘green man’ who is symbolic of Spring, new growth and the cycle of life.

Instead of traditional carving the timber is steamed to soften it then the design is pressed deep into the timber surface by heated steel dies under considerable hydraulic pressure permanently embossing the raised carving illusion into the grain. These chairs are referred to as ‘press back’ chairs.

Condition: Frames are very good structurally and finish wise - the chairs would benefit from a simple recovering to taste.

Size: ( Carver Chairs ) - Width 60cm x Seat depth 47cm x Height 100cm / ( Side Chairs ) - Width 48cm x Seat depth 44cm x Height 100cm.

Price: Priced to clear so $2,860 the set of eight chairs. The two carver chairs with arms are $395ea and the six side chairs are $345ea. sold as a set of eight chairs,

Sellers Observation: Good and unusual chairs at a very reasonable price as ( if a chair was missing ) you could not even get one chair made in Australia these days for the price to buy the whole set of eight. Great chairs for someone creative who wants something a little bit different.
