Antique English Victorian Mahogany Secretaire Book Case.

All genuine antiques are over 100 years old however are definitely not all the same as they very greatly in age, quality, style, condition, detail, rarity and materials used etc. This piece is an antique for the person who appreciates superior quality.

On offer is a genuine antique English mid Victorian period 1850-1855 two height Book Case / Display Cabinet of very pleasing proportions and superbly made by experienced craftsmen from the best quality imported prestigious selected ‘Tiger stripe’ Honduran Mahogany and with door and desk cross banding of ‘Fiddle back’ Mahogany.

The upper Book Case / Display Cabinet has a typical curved cornice and vertical pediment above a pair of tall doors with full height glazed panels within.Around the glass there are well profiled applied raised moldings with upper carved scroll work in the French Louis XV manner. Within the cabinet are not three but four full width shelves enclosed in a fully French polished interior such is the quality of this piece. On either side of the doors are both upper and lower inverted applied scrolled corbels in the French manner.

The lower Cabinet comprises of two sections with a canter levering deep frieze section which houses the pull out drop front Secretaire Desk which features a well fitted contrasting interior of drawers and pigeon holes plus an inset leather writing surface now worn with age. When closed the Secretaire drawer is cross banded and paneled both separated by a raised molding and features a pair of decoratively turned drawer pull knobs.

Below the desk is the storage cabinet with a a pair of blind timber paneled cupboards crafted to compliment the upper cabinet doors embellished with matching applied crest carved embellishments and on either side are well shaped and carved full height engaged pilasters with upper foliate scrolls. The whole sits on a fixed plinth base.

Condition: Excellent for age retaining the original polish and aged patina. We can have the leather professionally replaced and gold tooled at a trade price. Complete with upper and lower cabinet keys.

Sellers Observation: This exceptional quality is sadly infrequently available these days. It would have commanded a price of $12,000 / $15,000 around 40 years ago back in the ‘antique boom’ of the 1980s and probably will again as fashion cycles change.
