Antique English Georgian inlaid Mahogany Book Case.

A$2,995.00

On offer for sale is an excellent quality genuine antique English later Regency to George IV two height Book Case of excellent proportions and with desirable features.

The front is made of and finished with prestigious imported Honduran Mahogany from the Central Americas. The sides are made of Pine and stained to compliment the front. There were times when the English had troubles accessing the Mahogany so it was saved for the front of pieces. Also parts of England away from the coastal ports Mahogany was harder for cabinetmakers to obtain and or was highly expensive so was used for the fronts of cabinets especially if the item commissioned was to be placed in a recess like beside a chimney breast where the sides would not be featured.

This book case would have been commissioned and made for an educated person with a substantial home due to the high quality decorative inlay embellishments to the front.

The top Display Cabinet section features an architectural shaped pediment which has central and side rectangular feature panels and all sections are line inlaid. The pediment is also decoratively inlaid with fine lines with softer scrolled ends. The pair of doors feature slender glazing bars terminating in pointed Gothic revival arches and reveal an interior with three adjustable full width shelves.

The lower Storage Cabinet features a faux pull out slide with brass knob handles. Beneath are a pair of blind paneled doors inlaid at the top so as to match the pediment and also present as a faux drawer which has brass drawer pull knobs to match the faux pull out slide. The lower door panels feature a circular segmented parquetry highly figured Mahogany inlay with each section separated by lighter fine inlays and all radiating out from a small central inlay.

All supported on a platform base with front nicely ring turned plus curved and tapered which is another nice touch.
