Antique English Victorian Rosewood 'Wellington' Chest of Drawers.
Antique English Victorian Rosewood 'Wellington' Chest of Drawers.
This is a superior quality example of a genuine antique English mid Victorian circa 1850 beautifully made from selected prestigious imported Brazilian Rosewood.
Wellington Chests are unique as they do not have a lock on each and every drawer instead having a hinged flap in the form of a full height pilaster with a single lock which covers the drawer ends and once its single lock on the flap is locked the drawers are also locked. Usually they are of narrow upright rectangular shape with a series of flush fitting stacked and graduated drawers which are usually complete with pairs of nicely turned timber drawer pull knobs. All supported on a plynth base.
This fine quality piece follows the Wellington Chest formula however goes further as the canter levering top frieze section is deep and is actually a hidden compartment with a removable lift out rectangular tray with a glass bottom all accessed by a hinged lid which is the top of the Wellington Chest. As the frieze section canter levers forward beyond the drawer fronts it is aesthetically supported by applied impressive and dimensional carved corbels in the form of French āSā shaped scrolls. The chest is also embellished with a circular carved Mother of Pearl key hole escutcheon on the hinged flap and also on the faux side.
