Antique English George III late 18th century Cuban Mahogany Chest of Drawers.
Antique English George III late 18th century Cuban Mahogany Chest of Drawers.
This is a very good example of a high quality genuine antique English George III period from the later 1700s Chest of 8 Drawers.
The top as the sides are made from solid single boards of highly prized and desirable Cuban Mahogany recognised as “the best” Mahogany due to its dense and heavy qualities. The top is slightly overhangs and has a typical late 1700 decorative edge molding. The case is rectangular and has full height decorative finely reeded engaged corner columns on cantered corners.
an unusual feature is that there is a top row of extra drawers being three shallow side by side drawers with the normal two deeper side by side drawers beneath. Below again are the three full width graduated drawers. The top drawers like the bases to the reeded pilasters have a feature lighter Fruit Wood broard outer line inlay. All drawers are solid Oak lined, have an outer fine cock bead molding and original iron locks, brass drawer pull handles and keyhole escutcheons.
The chest sits on four corner positioned flattened bun feet however may have originally had straight bracket feet which could be replaced however would raise the height of the chest of drawers.
Condition: Very good commensurate with age and use however there are some minor and easily fixed issues with missing inlays and cock bead molding. basically just the usual issues with furniture over 225 years old.
